How Many Physio Sessions Do I Really Need?

By The Physio Don

It's one of the most common questions we get at The Physio Don: "How many sessions will I need?" The honest answer is that it depends on several factors — the nature of your condition, its severity, how long you've had it, your goals, and how consistently you follow your home exercise program.

That said, we can give you some rough guidelines based on the types of conditions we see most frequently in our Hervey Bay clinic.

Minor Issues: 1–5 Sessions

For recent, acute injuries like a mild ankle sprain, a pulled muscle, or a simple case of neck stiffness from sleeping awkwardly, you might only need a handful of sessions. We'll assess the injury, provide hands-on treatment to reduce pain and restore movement, give you exercises to do at home, and check in to make sure you're progressing.

Moderate Issues: 5–10 Sessions

Conditions like moderate low back pain, rotator cuff tendinopathy, or a more significant sprain typically fall into this category. These issues often involve some tissue damage or chronic muscle imbalances that need time and consistent work to resolve. We'll typically see you weekly or fortnightly, adjusting your program as you improve.

Severe or Chronic Issues: 10–15+ Sessions

Severe injuries (like an ACL reconstruction), chronic conditions (long-standing low back pain or osteoarthritis), or complex cases with multiple contributing factors may require a longer rehabilitation journey. This isn't a bad thing — it's simply realistic. These cases benefit from a structured, progressive program that builds strength and resilience over time.

The Biggest Variable: You

The factor that most influences your recovery timeline is how consistently you do your prescribed exercises and follow our advice. Patients who commit to their home program typically recover faster and more completely than those who only do exercises during clinic visits.

At The Physio Don, we always aim to get you independent as quickly as possible. Our goal isn't to keep you coming back forever — it's to give you the tools and knowledge to manage your own body long-term.
