How to Access Seniors Physiotherapy Using Your Home Care Package (Now Called the Support at Home Program)
By Donovan Baker
One of the most common things I hear from older adults is: "I didn't realise I could use my package for physiotherapy."
Honestly, you're not alone.
The aged care system can be confusing. There are assessments, referrals, funding levels and enough acronyms to make your head spin.
The good news is this. If you currently receive a Home Care Package, you'll probably start hearing a new name more often: the Support at Home Program.
For practical purposes, it's the same idea. The Australian Government has reformed the aged care system and introduced new terminology, but the overall goal remains exactly the same: help older Australians stay living safely, independently and confidently in their own homes.
And physiotherapy can play an incredibly important role in achieving that.
What's the Goal of These Programs?
Despite the different names, both Home Care Packages and the Support at Home Program have the same big-picture goal. Help older Australians remain living safely and independently in their own homes.
Because let's be honest. Most people aren't worried about getting older. They're worried about losing their independence. They're worried about:
-
Falling
-
Losing confidence
-
Needing help showering
-
Struggling with stairs
-
Giving up driving
-
Moving into residential care sooner than expected
These are all very real concerns. But here's something important. A lot of these issues aren't simply age problems. They're physical problems. And physical problems often respond really well to physical solutions.
Where Does Physiotherapy Fit In?
This is where physiotherapy can make a huge difference. Modern seniors physiotherapy isn't just massage and stretches. A lot of our work revolves around helping people maintain the physical capacity needed for everyday life.
That might involve improving:
-
Strength
-
Balance
-
Mobility
-
Walking confidence
-
Endurance
-
Falls risk
-
Pain management
Because staying independent is ultimately a physical task. If you're strong enough and confident enough to continue doing the things you enjoy, you're much more likely to remain independent.
What Conditions Can Physiotherapy Help With?
Physiotherapy may help older adults manage a huge range of conditions and concerns:
-
Falls and Balance Problems: Falls are one of the biggest threats to independence. Strength and balance training can help improve confidence and may reduce falls risk.
-
Arthritis: Painful knees and hips often cause people to become less active. Unfortunately, doing less often leads to becoming weaker. Appropriate exercise can help improve strength and function.
-
Deconditioning: A hospital stay, illness or period of inactivity can quickly lead to reduced strength and confidence. Rehabilitation helps rebuild that capacity.
-
General Mobility Problems: Sometimes people don't have one particular diagnosis. They simply feel like they're slowing down. Physiotherapy can help identify what's contributing and develop a plan moving forward.
Can I Have Physio At Home?
Absolutely. Many older adults prefer mobile seniors physiotherapy throughout Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast region.
In-home physiotherapy can be ideal if:
-
Leaving home is difficult
-
You no longer drive
-
You feel unsteady
-
You're recovering from surgery or illness
-
You simply feel more comfortable in your own environment
Others prefer attending the clinic. At the clinic, located inside LIFT Gym in Pialba, we can access additional equipment and strength training facilities. Neither approach is right or wrong. The best option is whichever allows you to engage consistently.
What Does Treatment Usually Look Like?
Every person is different, but sessions may include:
-
Strength training
-
Balance retraining
-
Walking programs
-
Falls prevention strategies
-
Functional exercises
-
Pain management advice
-
Education and self-management strategies
The aim isn't simply reducing pain. The aim is helping you continue doing the things that matter to you. Playing with grandchildren. Travelling. Shopping independently. Getting out into the garden. Staying in your own home. Those are usually the things people care about most.
The Bottom Line
Home Care Packages and the Support at Home Program exist for one reason: to help older Australians continue living well at home.
Physiotherapy can be an incredibly valuable part of that journey. Because independence doesn't happen by accident. It's usually built on having enough strength, enough confidence and enough physical capacity to keep doing the things you enjoy. And that's something worth investing in.
